AFCS is a state-of-the-art system that will be installed on all electric buses in our fleet in 2020. Passengers will be able to purchase tickets with their phones or mobile devices-no more waiting in line at the bus! This technology is a game changer for our riders. And we're partnering with Intel to make sure it's as seamless as possible.
Here's how it works:
When a passenger boards the bus, their mobile device will connect to the on-board NFC reader. They'll be able to purchase an e-fare card online or through the app with a tap of their phone-just like how you'd order an Uber. After they board the bus, they'll be able to use the card throughout the ride the same way they use a MetroCard today. The only difference is that the cardholder will be able to use the e-card regardless of whether they're riding a bus or a train.

RFID cards will be fixed on the vehicle windshield which will be encoded with the vehicle identity.
